Welcome
to my little home on the web.

image     Well, here I go again. I had to go and try to put into practice some of the things I have been learning since I left school, just over a year ago.

Wow...Check it out.
This is the twelfth(12) version of my website. An even dozen, now. LOL It's sure been a long time since I've used this logo on my very first personal website.

I have posted all the source files for this website, at the SWiSHZone Forums as a free download for the online community. I've learned a lot in those forums, and thought I could go and give something back. Maybe someone will learn something from it.

Site Features

Ok, the goal here is to take what I have and work it all into a useable, attractive website. I personally would like to go for a clean look, and still create a good content layout that utilizes the white space the best. After 20 years in the offset printing industry as a press operator, I've seen a lot of page layouts in print and it seems that I should try to base this website layout on that knowledge, even if it is a simple page layout.

As with several of my past projects, Carmex Lip Balm, and my own v11_1 of FlawlessDog.com, this site features the SWFAddress. I really do like that bit of script, as it feeds right into my interest in a good flash navigation system. I've had a bit of practice using this script, and I think I have improved somewhat. You can find most all of the work I done with SWFAddress, at the SWiSHZone forums.

I have learned to create the pages a bit more dynamically, so I am no longer using the timeline based system in the beginner examples that can be found on Asual's samples page. In this example, the entire nav system structure is created and controlled from the menu xml.

In addition, this site is far better Search Engine Optimized ...I hope... I tried to base this on the SEO example provided by Asual in the examples folder. However, I wanted to create a version that wasn't written in PHP, but instead was written in html...Ummm...for no other reason than to see if I could do it LOL...
Anyway...all the content is written in the index page of the site. It seems to work ok, but could do with a few more hours work.

Also, I am playing around with stage management to a greater extent in this version of my website. This also includes the use of a scrollbar to handle content overflow. The scrollbar should work pretty much like any other; scroll wheel activated, up and down keyboard arrows as well as the page up, page down keys which will scroll the window a bit faster than the arrow keys. I am using a new formula to size the scrollbar itself so that is a more accurate ratio to the content height.

A Blog!?
Oh horsefeathers...

June 18, 2009:

'K...here I go again...
Look how long it's been...cripes...
Blogs are such a pain, if you don't have anything to say...or can't say anything. LOL

We went live with the first completed new project started since I began this adventure last November. The MATC Stormers website.
It turned out pretty well, I think. Still, I think it needs a better content area layout. I've never been good at that, and it is proving to be a real weakness. Ah, so much to learn. I hope I get to keep trying to get it right.

It has indeed been a learning experience. I understand better now, the restraints placed on most everything in my department. I wouldn't want my bosses job, but will back him up in what ever will do the school the most good. This is my very first experience inside a real office, outside of the freelance world. I got used to working from home, and this has been more difficult than I expected. The Stormers website, and another that is in the works but I can't talk about just now, are the first sites I've worked on where I didn't have complete control. That was hard for me, but I learned a lot, and in the end, I have enjoyed it a lot.

I'll try to make another entry in this silly blog, before as much time has passed as this time.

Be well :o)

June 8, 2009:

Well, now it has been a long time since my last entry. A lot has happened, and mostly all good. Couple bumps in the road the past week or so. Still, all in all not bad.

I have been busy with work, and there are going to be some exciting changes in the future. Most stuff I can't talk about just yet...but soon. :o)

Today, I'm just rying something new to improve the SEO of this site. ...Might work... It'll take a while before the changes show up on Google. Maybe a few days. I'll know then if it worked or not LOL.

Later :o)

Jan. 24, 2009:

There, see? I knew this would happen. It's been like, last year since my last entry...dangit! Never was very good at this blog entry thing. Silly damn things, anyway!

The new job is going very well. We are getting ready to launch an updated design for the athletics department of MATC. As soon as we go live with it, I'll post more about it here.

In anycase, here we go again. It's a new year, and we have a new President in these here United States of America, and it's about damn time, too. He sure seems to be a good man, and I wish him well. He'll have his hands full, thanks to the Bush years. As a friend of mine so eloquently puts it...
Well...never mind all that....what's done is done, and time to move on, now.

Dec-2008

Dec. 20, 2008:

Merry Christmas!
I know, I know, it's been a while since my last post. What can I say? I like my job, and I have been spending a lot of extra time working on little projects. I wish I could post some of them here, but so far I am not allowed. :o)
They are trying out a little thing I did. Simple little picture slider thing, to replace the animated gif on the very bottom left part of the MATC home page.

Cool beans, huh? LOL
Just a little mask fx, but still looks pretty good, and is almost 10kb smaller than the original gif.

Also made a pretty big update to this template. I was able to take that bottom of the page menu thing that is on each page of the site, and moved it(them all!) into a simple set of xml tags in the index.html
That will make updates much easier, huh? I thought so too. I'll get them uploaded to the SWiSHZone forums before the weekend is over. I got some last minute stuff to do for Christmas this year...again...dang it LOL Oh well :o)

Update:
Ok, got the updated files for the v12 template, uploaded to the SWiSHZone forums.
Check 'em out here.
Enjoy :o)

I hope you all have a great Holiday. Stay safe. Be happy and well.

Dec. 11, 2008:

Well, I guess I best at least make somekind of entry in here, if for no other reason than just to start a new month. It has been a while since my last entry. The job is going well. Still lots to learn about how things work around there. I'm getting to do some cool stuff. Just helped get the new holiday ecard up and running. Cool stuff, and student made. I think it's great they are starting to show off the students work more often. I hope to see more student work on the website during my stay at MATC.

A Blog!?
Nov-2008

Nov. 29, 2008:

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and got plenty to eat; spent time with family, and just had a good time.
I did :o)

I had some time the past couple days, and played some with the MATC logo.
Turned out pretty dang good, too!!
Check it out:

...Well nuts...I can't post it here, but if you could see it you would be awed and amazed!

I find that working at a school is inspiring to me, even tho all my time so far has been spent taking an inventory of each and every asset in the school website. Don't get me wrong, I know it's an important thing to have, but if I didn't create something new...soon...my head was going to pop. LOL
I feel much better now, thank you. :o)

It's a fun logo to work with, and I thought it a good idea to get to know it better. I was able to get a copy of the base vector MATC logo work, opened it up in Illustrator, exported a swf, and then imported that into SWiSHMax2 for animation.

The drop shadow might be causing a bit of a CPU usage issue. It could be dropped for the sake of performance. I was having a layering issue but I think I got it, mostly. There is one small flaw, but it's pretty hard to see. If you want to look for it, it's right in the middle of the anima.

Nov. 21, 2008:

Well, I just completed my second week on the new job. Been doing a lot of work getting to know the files; up close and personal too! This week I am working on taking a full inventory of each and every single file, and folder on the server....and boy, are there a lot of files LOL All was going well, right up until today, right before quitting time. The info I am to gather, in addition to the files names and paths, are the last user that made an update, the last user to approve the update, and the date of that update and approval. I was doing real well, tho it is very slow going, and after about 2000 files(less than a third of the way...) I discovered I was taking the wrong date, and entering it in my inventory. As you can imagine, I was pretty sick about it, when I found out. I had to tell the boss about it, and he seemed to take it ok, but I know I disapointed him. That sucks too.

Nov. 16, 2008:

Got an update: for the v12 template
This fixes the bug in the email form, and the clumsy solution I had in there for the "Selection.setFocus" issue for the input fields of the contact form. The email form used to work fine when imported into the text field like it is now, but after one of the flash9 updates it no longer worked. That was when I tried that onRelease work around on each of the input text fields. It was clumsy and I should have thought of this new solution before; it was so obvious. Sorry 'bout that.

Anyway, as follows:
The contact form itself is now a library item in the index.swi and is no longer in the contact.swi. The new contact.swi now uses attachMovie to call the actual contact form from the index.swf, and places it right over itself, just outside of the main text area.
_root.mainBody.pageHolder.myArea.getNextHighestDepth()
Deletes itself when the contact.swf is no longer in the page.

Zipfile can be found here and contains an updated index.swi, and contact.swi
You'll need to export your swf's from your own v12 work folder.
All other files in the original zipfile haven't changed at this point.

Nov. 14, 2008:

'K...I had a GREAT first week at the new job.
Learning the system layout, and CMS. Not too bad. It has a few bugs, and could be better, but it's not so bad. Just needs a bit-o-TLC once in a while. LOL And by golly, I'm just the guy to do it :o)

I am looking forward to starting something there that will last beyond my own span. Can't think of a better place in which to carry out such a dream. I've learned a lot over the years, and if I can help inspire someone a bit, then all the better, huh?

Yeah, that's what I thought, too. LOL

Nov. 9, 2008:

image

Been spending the weekend trying to get ready for the new job. I am a bit nervous, but still can't wait to start the new gig. I'll do my best do make a valuable contribution to this new project. I have a few ideas already that I'd like to propose, if I'm given the chance. We'll see. This will be the biggest project I've ever been a part of before....back to being nervous   ;o)

So, today I'm doing a bit of house keeping. I'm still unpacking boxes from when I moved here back in January. Keeping busy, so I don't think about it too much. LOL Got all my pictures and wood odds and ends hung.

Nov. 8, 2008:

Well, that day I feared has finally come...
I knew it would happen someday, but now that it has I can't help but feel somewhat sad about it as I had no part it.

The new website design for Carmex is up and running.
It looks pretty good, too......dang it LOL
http://www.mycarmex.com/

I am still happy and very grateful that I got to be a part of that company's history.
Thanks Paul :o)
It was great fun, and I will always remember the time I spent working on the old site!!

Nov. 5, 2008:

Just heard yesterday that I got the full time job I had applied for,
And I start Monday morning!!

So, in celebration of that and in the spirit of learning and sharing that which I have learned, I have decided to offer v12 of FlawlessDog.com as a download for the SWiSHMax community in a thread called Bringing It All Together.

I've been asked several times how I did the stage management, scroll bar, and all the rest of it.
Seems a picture is worth a thousand words, so here we go.

This template is NOT a component, and is only for those that really like to get their hands dirty and are able to just jump right into the ActionScript.

I've tried to leave as many notes as I could within the ActionScript, so read on.
I've changed the text, and killed the links.
Got rid of all but one gallery pic for the sake of the zip file size.

Enjoy!

Nov. 4, 2008:

Go out and VOTE today!!
I cast my vote today, and was among the first 100(#61) voters today in my town. I am very happy to have cast my vote for Barack Obama/Joe Biden. Best of luck to them. I know they will do well when elected.

Nov. 3, 2008:

All righty, then ;o)
I've gone live with this site, and I am proud of it. I made a few updates since I last posted. This site is now Search Engine Optimized. All the content is contained in and being imported from the index.html page and it seems to work pretty well.

The text field script I am using is based on the work Greg Baker (gsb) did a couple years ago for the Great SWiSH Max Competition 2006, Not Just Another Scroller. One of the best scrollbars ever scripted for SWiSHmax in my honest opinion.

Still, it took some re-writing to suit my needs for this site. I striped out the scrollbar parts but kept some of the other features, like the processSpecialTags function as well as the getTag function which suited my needs perfectly in this application. Then had to make the text field autoSize=true so it would re-size according to the text being loaded. Once that was done, it was an easy matter to read the _height of the text field for use with the new stage management scrollbar I have installed here.

A Blog!?
Oct-2008

Oct. 31, 2008:

Happy Halloween!!
Spent a little more time fine tuning the Stage management. I got rid of the jump-into-place thing that was happening towards the end of some of the tweens on browser resize. I think it was happening because I was moving the same object with two different tweens; basically duplicating movements. In any case, that problem has been solved to my satisfaction.

Oct. 30, 2008:

Well, I've done a few new things yesterday, and today. I took out all the old easing scripts; the plain penner.as and all the SWiSHMAx2 Math.approch stuff. Replaced it all with the MC Tween2 easing scripts. Does seem to work better, now. There does still seem to be a couple bugs left when I re-size the screen, tho not too bad.

Nice thing is there are fewer onEnterFrames running at any given time, and that sure seems to have helped the cpu usage issues.

There are still quite a few things I need to do before I go fully live with this version, but I am a few steps closer to that day.

Oct. 28, 2008:

Put together a new xml gallery for use on this site. Wanted to fill up the page a bit on this one, so used a grid for the thumbnails. Also, as the pics were too big to fit in the page, I placed them over the page. Used a block out to hide the links under the full sized pic. It's a bit more "manual" than I would have otherwise liked. Gotta click the pic to close it, before viewing another, but still not too awful bad, huh?

Oct. 27, 2008:

Added some content to the right side banner, with links to extra work posted on a couple different forums. There you will find source files and live examples of some of my extra projects done since school. In each thread, check for multiple and updated attachments. Seems I can never post just one version of anything. Always got to try to make it better than it was, if I can. Just created these for my own learning experience, and it's always good to share with those you've learned from.

Enjoy!

Oct. 25, 2008:

Well, if nothing else, I can keep some notes in here, about the development of this version of my site. So, here we go.

Had to get rid of all the flash8 drop shadow filters in each of the buttons in the inner pages. They were causing trouble with the scroll, and really messing up the CPU usage. Does seem to work better now.

Also, added some easing to the scroll bar height adjustment, so it just didn't pop to the size needed for the content height. That looks better.

Right now, I still have a simple set of Penner equations for some of the effects. That means the manually set up timers, and all that. Before I go live with this, I will go thru this thing, and set it up with the MC Tween engine I converted for SWiSHMax2. That should help quite a bit with some of my onEnterFrames I have set and in fact, I'll be able to do away with most of those. I'll be able to use the call backs to trigger other function rather than messing around with this. That will take some time to do, so will wait until I get all the content set up for each page.

Cool, huh? ;o)

Oct. 24, 2008:

Ok...first line of the first post in this little blog.
Not sure just how much I'll use this, but here we go.
Who knows? Maybe I'll post something profound in here or something.

Final Projects
And other school work that I am proud of.

Contained in these pages, are examples of my best school work completed for classes at Milwaukee Area Technical College. I started off in the eCommerce/Web Administration program. However, after I got my first accounting book, I decided that a change was in order.

I signed up for the Visual Communications program, and I discovered that I had pretty much found my niche. I love working with good graphics, but I rediscovered that the web animation and programming is what I really like the most. I have learned that there is more to good design, then the pretty pictures. When it's up on that computer screen, it's gotta work right, and that's what I'm into.

VICOM 1 -
Programming in SwishMax is a lot like programming in Macromedia Flash, so the transition from SwishMax to Macromedia Flash has been fun for me. I like converting SwishMax script to Flash action script and back again when I have time. Working with Macromedia Flash has really been helpful in cleaning up my script, and getting it all in one place so it is easier to edit later.

VICOM 2 -
This page is a collection of website templates, and graphic work examples that I have completed for various classes. In the website templates, I have tried to pay particular attention to writing clean xhtml, and css.

Photo Gallery -
This page contains 40 of my favorite 35mm color transparencies taken in PHOTO 101.

Written Works -
This page is a collection of written works, completed for 2 different creative and essay writing classes.

Archive of Past Works
The years before school at MATC

These pages contain an archive of past works I've saved over the years. Most was done simply for the fun of learning a new thing. After 20 years in the off-set printing industry, I had found a need in myself for something new. Started off selling stuff on eBay, and that was where I learned just how much fun html could be. After that, I was hooked. These examples may not all look good, but together they show the progress I have made in the years before MATC.

The-verybest.com was my first domain name and I used it to practice all I was learning about html, css, javascript, and flash.
After a few years had passed and I finally did start school, I said goodbye to that domain, and started FlawlessDog.com where I continue to hone my skills.
I hope you enjoy looking around in here, as much as I have had creating it.

I've been a part of a few online communities, especially the SwishMax, and Web Design communities, where I have learned a great deal. These communities were, and will continue to be my class room.

As a Proud Alumnus of these communities,
I would like to thank those great folks at the following sites that have helped me learn, and continue to help all those others that ask:

eggs-in-wisconsin 3d

http://www.flawlessdog.com/eggzdownload/3d/
When I got my first computer, one of the first things I found on the Internet were these folks that do 3-d works. Early on, one group that inspired me quite a bit were those that worked with Pov-Ray.
Pov-Ray programming isn't my cup of tea, nor is it an industry standard program, but I still loved the images that they produced. Those artists were one of the inspirations behind these animations.

FlawlessDog Chat

This chat application is the result of a lot of research into creating a chat room with SwishMax. I made several versions before this one and in each instance, I learned to build upon what I have already learned. This chat uses php that I edited a bit, and writes to a txt file.

I found a Macromedia Flash analog clock tutorial from Flash-kit.
I converted the ActionScript to SwishScript,
and played with a few different clock faces.
